Edinburgh-based software firm acquired by Bluefin Robotics

Massachusetts-based Bluefin Robotics, the company behind a variety of autonomous underwater vehicles for commercial-, scientific- and defense-based applications, reported today that it has acquired software provider SeeByte Ltd.

SeeByte makes software specifically for underwater vehicles, sensors and systems, and the two companies have worked together for more than five years developing software for Bluefin’s platforms. SeeByte is based in Edinburgh, Scotland, where it originally spun out from Heriot-Watt University.

Bluefin says SeeByte will operate as a wholly owned subsidiary and continue to provide platform-agnostic software products and support for clients. The development team will also continue to support and evolve its existing product line, which includes SeeTrack Military, SeeTrack AutoTracker and SeeTrack CoPilot. SeeByte works across a variety of market segments but particularly in the defense sector and commercial oil and gas industry.

Terms of the transaction were not disclosed, but according to Bluefin all SeeByte staff and offices will be retained.
